INSPIRING ART CLASSES FOR ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES
One River School has developed a unique art program for individuals, ages 18 and up with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our unique methodology and skilled educators encourage students to develop a visual art practice that is authentic and reflective of each students particular interests and passions while fostering self-esteem and independence.
“Creative Impact” educates students in a variety of artistic media while offering a nurturing and therapeutic approach. Students are instructed at their own level and encouraged to explore various materials and projects. The curriculum offers guidance in a particular medium and creative approach for several weeks at a time so students can learn and master the skills required to produce artwork with confidence. Our “shuffle” methodology moves on to another medium or project and builds up skills from the previous weeks. Learning is tailored for each student while social interaction encouraged and helps students develop meaningful relationships with their peers.
Led by art therapists and skilled educators, the program is sensitive to the needs of young adults with challenges of transitioning out of school and into the adult world. The program encourages students to be creative and express themselves while supporting them in their journey to the next phase of their lives.
